Assignment 8: Object Connection ( Jointing )

This week, we have to do a puzzle together. Imagine 160++ people doing a big puzzle, it is cool, right? Everyone has to doddle on his/her puzzle piece based on the previous assignments. The theme is free this time so I guess many people are going to produce amazing puzzle pieces.

I have included in the HBP school, my sculpture and also natural geometry - the Sun in my puzzle piece. At first I decided to colour with magic colour but the effect is not satisfying. Thus, I have used poster colour instead. My friends and I decided to do row of puzzles that use "wall" as the background so that we can achieve the aim of this assignment, that is to show oneness/unity. I draw on a piece of drawing paper and paste it on the foam board.

Assignment 6: Analysis of HBP Spaces ( Composition )

Wow... this is our first Site Analysis. Actually, I know nothing about site analysis. It is totally new to me. After doing some research on the internet and asking some friends, I have got some ideas about this assignment. Basically, we need to do a board that contains the information about HBP.

I have drawn the Key Plan ( Penang Island ), Location Plan ( USM ) and Site Plan ( HBP ).

HBP is known as School of Housing, Building and Planning. It is the only School in whole Malaysia which offers integrated syllables for students of different disciplines. The disciplines are architecture, quantity surveying, building surveying, building technology, construction management, urban & regional planning and interior design. All the students have a chance to study with those from other disciplines and this helps them to understand who are the actors in construction industry. They can learn how to complete a project successfully when cooperating with people of different knowledge.

I have included the sun path, accessibility and some photos of the buildings to give a better understanding about HBP. According to the sun path, the studio ( Block E08 ) is the only building that faces the sun ray most of the time. So, it is considered as one of the hottest building of HBP. Luckily, there are trees that can block solar radiation. Besides, the building is air-conditioned, so the users will not feel warm easily.

Next, the grey arrows show the pathway where the vehicles can move about in HBP. Basically, there is only 1 entrance and 1 exit. However, traffic congestion rarely occurs here as there are very few vehicles. Most of the car parks are only available for dean, lecturers and also staffs. Students often park their vehicles outside of HBP area.

Assignment 5A: Feeling Mask

What is feeling? For me, feeling is something abstract. We cannot touch it, cannot see it, cannot hold it, but we can only sense them with our heart and soul. When I was young, I thought that feeling only consists of happiness, sadness and anger. However, since I have been studying for about 1 month in USM, I realised that there is a feeling known as love.

I will say that love is like a double edge weapon, it can send you to heaven by giving you happiness but at the same time, it can also drag you to hell. At first, I was going to do a devil mask as I always feel that I am evil. Haha.. However, after I have met with my parents who came from my hometown, I decided to do a love mask instead.

Step 1

These are my materials: Toilet roll, newspaper, white glue, water, container

Step 2
Put a layer of plastic paper on my face. Then, my friend glue toilet roll on my face layer by layer.

Step 3

Allow the mask to dry for 1 night

Step 4

Thicken the mask by putting more layers of newspaper and tissue paper

My design concept is like this.
For the right part, I have used a row of heart shapes to represent the eyebrow. This is because I feel that someone who can feel love will be very happy and all his/her face features will become lovely. At the cheek, there is a small love coming out from a big love. This indicates that someone who is happy to be loved will usually share the happiness of being loved to the others. Hence, a small love is coming out from the big love. We all know that sharing is caring.

On the other hand, I have used some shiny, glittering powder as my main decorating material for the left part of my mask. There are many stripes to create the face of the ancient people. This is to show that since ages ago, love has been revolving around us. All we have to do is to discover it, enjoy it and eventually spread it. We can only fully enjoy the happiness that love can bring us by spreading love to the others. Besides, by using such glittering powder, regardless of day or night, my mask is easily noticed by others as we all are easily attracted by shiny objects. For instance, ladies are easily attracted by jeweleries. =)

In conclusion, my feeling mask is a "love mask" and it represents my feeling towards my loved ones deep from my heart.

Assignment 4B: Blue Print

*Axonometric projection is a type of parallel projection, more specifically a type of orthographic projection, used to create a pictorial drawing of an object, where the object is rotated along one or more of its axes relative to the plane of projection.

Assignment 4A: Sculpture

First of all, I would like to explain a bit about Sculpture. According to Wikipedia, Sculpture is three-dimensional artwork created by shaping or combining hard materials - typically stone such as marble - or metal, glass, or wood. Softer ("plastic") materials can also be used, such as clay, textiles, plastics, polymers and softer metals. The term has been extended to works including sound, text and light.

For this assignment, we can only use mounting board to produce a sculpture based on the theme"sustainability" and it has to be in monochrome. Monochrome basically means a series of colour formed by adding black or white, such as light yellow, sunset yellow, dark yellow and so on.

Step 1: Surf the internet for some ideas

I have decided to use blocks as my main design concept

Step 2: Trial

My initial idea is to cut the shapes of some blocks and glue them on the mounting board. However, I feel that the effect is not as nice as I thought. Hence, it is time for some changes.

Step 3: Measure, cut and design

After some brainstorming and getting advice from my friends, I have made up my mind to use this design. The shape is a trapezium with blocks of a variety of shapes which are in black, grey and white colour.

The concept is based on the following points:

- Trapezium gives the shape of a mountain
Most of mountains are having the shape of a trapezium. By making the sculpture in such way, it allows others to think that this sculpture's theme is based on nature, which fulfills the requirement of the assignment - sustainability. Sustainability has a lot of definitions. However, in this assignment, I interpret sustainability as the maintenance of the environment by using the natural resources wisely.

- Different blocks are used to fill the centre

Mountains are made up of many types of soil. We may find clay, sand, slit and others. Blocks of the same colour represent one type of soil texture. Just like our Mother Earth, it exists in a few layers of texture, which are crust, upper mantle, mantle, outer core and inner core. Each layer will have different types of minerals and soil texture.

Besides, I have chosen blocks as they seem alike with the bricks we use in construction. In order to build a sustainable building, we have to use the correct material so that it can last long and environmental friendly. Buildings that are built in such a way that they can save electricity are considered sustainable. When buildings are stable and lasting, we can reduce deforestation as the demand for timber used in construction has dropped. This will indirectly help in sustaining the environment.

Assignment 3B: Perspective

This assignment definitely gives all of us a "What?!?!?!" We are asked to draw perspective drawings based on our models done for Assignment 3A. The problem is I do not even know what is perspective drawing. Luckily, we are shown some slideshows about it. Phew... Basically, perspective drawing is a technique used to represent three-dimensional images on a two-dimensional picture plane.

These are my first few sketches... It is much harder than I expect...


After getting some advice from the pros, I managed to produce a 2 point perspective drawing. Haha...

Assignment 3A: Pictorial

In this assignment, we are required to create a 3d model using 8 cubes based on the idea of rubix cube. After that we have to draw the plan, front view and side view of the model. So, shall we start?

According to the instructions, we are only allowed to make a model that consists of 2 rows and we can only move the cubes either up, down, left or right based on the standard rubix cube model. I have played rubix cube before, but if I want to produce a model that is related to construction industry, it may be a bit challenging. However, I will not just give up like this. =)
While I was still deciding what type of arrangement I shall use, I had started to form my cubes.

Cube's Production:

Step 1) Measure and draw the sides of squares

Step 2) Cut and colour

Step 3) Glue them together.
Step 4) Cover the edge with a layer of black masking tape
Step 5) 8 identical cubes are formed.

So, it is the time to do my model. For those who don't know what is a rubix cube, it actually looks like this.
A big cube formed by small cubes of 6 different colours. After trying some different arrangements, I have decided to have the following arrangement as my model.

Assignment 2B: Natural Structure ( Space & Depth )

Talking about natural structure, most of us will think about flora and fauna. Many are not aware that the galaxy, the sun, the earth, the moon and even the microorganisms are part of the natural structure. Thus, I have chosen the mighty sun as my theme.

In this assignment, we are asked to colour the drawing to produce space and depth.

My "tools" of my assignment:-

A few paper strips and a circle with a star figure at the centre

I have used red, yellow and orange for the sun's colour. In the centre, I have drawn a small circle which is red in colour, enclosed in a star like figure, signifying the sun's core is covered by a layer of plasma. For the sun rays, I leave the centre part white as the brightest light is white in colour.
Some may be asking, why I did not use black or blue as my background? Well, the answer is simple. I feel that brown colour can blend better with the other colours and can enhance the effect of the sun rays.

Assignment 2A: Man-made Structure ( Form & Structure )

So, this time we have to sketch any part of my school, which is School of Housing, Building and Planning. It is the only School in whole Malaysia where students from different disciplines like architecture, quantity survey, building survey, urban and regional planning, building technology, interior design and construction management study under the same roof for the first year. It's cool, right?

After moving around my School while trying to find a good view, I have decided to use the following view. It is the QS Studio, where those QS seniors and lecturers call the "room of suffering" or "room of hell".
